Artifact 1:
The What Works Program
The program aims to improve levels of literacy and numeracy; and rates of school completion and successful participation in post-school options. These goals are underpinned by respect for students' cultures, and partnerships with carers and the community. The materials are based on a three part analysis of the way teachers and schools generally work to improve outcomes for Indigenous students: building awareness, forming partnerships, and working systematically.
Build awareness
The foundation of effective action is awareness of the issues involved.
Form partnerships
Partnerships between school and Indigenous communities are an important element of effective action. You can't have a partnership without a relationship, and you can't have a relationship without a conversation. You've got to have the conversation. Everything starts here.
Working systematically
Effective action is carefully planned, implemented and integrated.
